Cards produced by Landis & Gyr, 'optical cards' are manufactured with a track of metal foil with a series of patterns embossed on the strip that are read by a beam of infrared light.

All cards manufactured normally have a control number ! A number or combination of letters and digits impressed on the reverse of the card
usually in the bottom-right corner.

Test and Service cards are for the use by engineers and are not available to the general public. Some users of Landis & Gyr have Service cards in their own colours and with their own logos. Some cards have the words "SODECO" and "Phonecard" on them and arrows in the top corners with numbers in them, These cards were also used as gap fillers when cards were urgently needed and as trials. The numbers in the arrows were related to their own country encoding so that the right card could be supplied for their system. See picture gallery below
