Here is a sample of the INTRODUCTION page from the catalogue :

This catalogue is the first in a series covering all telephone cards issued in the United Kingdom. This volume covers in detail all the optical cards issued by British Telecom (BT). Further volumes in the series will include BT Chip Cards, Mercury Communications, Paytelco, Isle Of Man, Jersey, and Guernsey, plus all the other smaller card issuing companies.

BT was amongst the first telephone companies in the world to use telephone cards, the earliest cards coming into public use in 1981. The system adopted was Landis & Gyr optical cards which were manufactured originally in Switzerland and subsequently in the UK. Since 1996 'chip' cards manufactured by GPT, Gemplus and more recently Schlumberger have been in use in parallel with the optical system. The current public issue cards use a new technology called 'Phonecard Plus' whereby they can be used in payphones by being inserted into the reader, or, from any touch tone phone by keying in a PIN number printed on the reverse of the card.

There is a considerable range of BT phonecards, issued for specific uses and for a number of reasons including closed user groups such as offshore oil rigs and prisons. For the convenience of collectors, these have been listed in their appropriate categories, definitions of which will be found in the following section.

For the first time, we have included a comprehensive data section to include print quantities and control numbers for public issue cards, most of which have been taken from official records augmented by years of research from within the hobby.

Also contained within this volume are several new sections illustrating cards previously unknown to collectors. These include proof and experimental cards, plus a full listing of all the BT Visiting Cards which were produced between 1987 and 1996.
